A large scrapbook containing magazine and newspaper illustrations, advertisements, postcards and lithographs shows Samuel E. Chamberlain's interest in art and illustration. A photograph of Chamberlain is on the first page. The album, used as a scrapbook, has a caption "Ordnance and ordnance stores, the property of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in charge of, ". Sources for the illustrations include Godey's Ladies Book, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, Harper's Weekly, The Illustrated London News, calendars, advertisements, and books. Images include illustrations of works by Shakespeare, Louisa May Alcott, and the Bible. Subjects include Mexican War soldiers, Civil War battles and generals, literary scenes, European cities, Indians, famous beauties, rulers and statesmen, sentimental scenes and cartoons. Artists include Gustav Dore, W. Granville Smith, Howard Chandler Christy, Thomas Nast, Emmanuel Leutze, and Charles M. Russell.

Chamberlain, Samuel E. (Samuel Emery), 1829-1908

Samuel Emery Chamberlain was born in Centre Harbour, New Hampshire, on November 27, 1829. He fought with the First United States Dragoons in Mexico in 1846-48. During the Civil War he joined the First Massachusetts Cavalry and rose to brevet brigadier general. In 1865 Chamberlain was appointed assistant quartermaster general of the State of Massachusetts, and placed in charge of the state arsenal. He died November 10, 1908.
